‘Not all cancerous tumours are actually cancer’

Thyroid growths are first ever to be ‘downgraded’ to prevent patients having unnecessary treatment

The particular type of thyroid tumour has been downgraded from cancer to stop unnecessary treatment for patients

The particular type of thyroid tumour has been downgraded from cancer to stop unnecessary treatment for patients

Scientists have re-classified a certain type of cancer as less serious, in what they claim is a world first.

They say a particular form of the disease that affects the thyroid will now be downgraded to more accurately reflect the level of the condition.

The international panel of pathologists and clinicians say the reclassification of this type of thyroid cancer demonstrates the fact it is non-invasive and has a low risk of recurrence.

It is hoped it will reduce the possible psychological effects of being diagnosed with cancer as well as reducing the cost caused by unnecessary treatments. Continue reading

The substance, PFOA, which is found throughout the home, has previously been branded potentially carcinogenic.

Now it has been further called into question by research which shows that those with higher levels in the blood have higher rates of thyroid disease.

Women – who are more susceptible to thyroid problems – are at double the risk, according to the study. PFOA is used in industrial and consumer goods including non- stick cookware such as Teflon-coated pans – where it becomes unstable at very high temperatures – fast-food packaging, and flame-resistant and stain-resistant coatings for carpets and fabrics. California thyroid cancer rate higher than national average

Can you say, “Fukushima?”

Researchers think environmental effects related to the large amount of farmland in California could be affecting thyroid cancer rates there.

The overall rate of advanced-stage thyroid cancer diagnoses in California is six percent higher than the rest of the United States, with several geographical areas in the state outpacing the statewide rate by even more. Photo by Bork/Shutterstock

Are thyroid problems caused by environmental toxins?

What role do heavy metals play in causing thyroid disorders?

thyroidThe thyroid is a vascular gland that is located in the lower anterior part of the neck. The thyroid gland contains two lobes connected by a small tissue called the isthmus. Each lobe measures 50-60mm long and weighs 25-30g in adults. The hypothalamus located in the mid brain area releases the hormone called thyroid releasing hormone (TRH). TRH stimulates the anterior pituitary gland to produce thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). The TSH in turn will stimulate the thyroid to produce the thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4).

The thyroid hormones affect a lot of different cells in the body. They increase the basal metabolic rate and help regulate bone growth and maturation of the nervous system. The thyroid hormones also regulate the metabolism of carbohydrate, protein and fat. Continue reading

Vitamin B-12 Deficiency and Hypothyroidism

thyroidWhat is Vitamin B12?
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble B vitamin also known as cobalamin.

There are 4 forms of vitamin B12: cyanocobalamin, hydroxocobalamin, methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. While cyanocobalamin is the most popular form, it has to be converted to the two active vitamers, adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin, before the body utilizes the vitamin.

Vitamin B12 is found in every cell of the body. It is required for cellular metabolism and energy production, the production and regulation of the DNA and for fatty acid metabolism. Continue reading

Foods and Supplements That HEAL the Thyroid

Dried-Seaweed-Nori-Arame-KelpFresh, raw, organic produce heals. Produce heals everything. Other than that, foods high in iodine and foods that are high in selenium are known to aid thyroid function.

Why thyroid diseases are so common—and still so mysterious

leadWhen I first suspected I was suffering from hypothyroidism, I did what any anxious, Internet-connected person would do and Googled “dysfunctional thyroid symptoms,” and, in another tab, “hypothyroid thinning hair??” for good measure.

What came up sounded like someone describing me for an intimately detailed police sketch: Continue reading
